Book 9: 《子罕》 Zi Han (The Master Shunned)
《子罕》 Passage 9.3
子曰:「麻冕,禮也;今也純,儉。吾從眾。拜下,禮也;今拜乎上,泰也。雖違眾,吾從下。」
Legge Translation (1861)
The Master said: "The linen cap is the prescribed cap, but at present, the silk one is worn. This is economical, and I follow the common practice. After the prescribed form, the bow should be made at the foot of the hall, but at present, it is made above the hall. This is arrogance, and I, although I go contrary to the common practice, continue to bow below."
