Book 14: 《憲問》 Xian Wen (Xian Asked)

《憲問》 Passage 14.6

子曰:「君子而不仁者有矣夫,未有小人而仁者也。」

Legge Translation (1861)

Nan Rong asked Confucius, saying: "Yi was a famous archer, and Ao could move a boat on land, but neither of them died a natural death. Yu and Ji, on the other hand, personally wrought as the husbandmen of their people, and their families got the empire."

The Master made no reply; but when Nan Rong had gone out, he said: "A superior man indeed is this! An esteemer of virtue indeed is this!"
