Book 14: 《憲問》 Xian Wen (Xian Asked)

《憲問》 Passage 14.20

子曰:「其言之不怍,則為之也難。」

Legge Translation (1861)

The Master was speaking about the unprincipled course of the Duke Ling of Wei, when Ji Kang said: "Since he is of such a character, how is it he does not lose his State?"

Confucius said: "Zhongshun Yu has the charge of the guests and visitors; the litanist Tuo has the charge of the ancestral temple; and Wangsun Jia has the charge of the armies: — with such officers as these, how should he lose his State?"
