Book 9: 《子罕》 Zi Han (The Master Shunned)
《子罕》 Passage 9.27
子曰:「衣敝縕袍,與衣狐貉者立,而不恥者,其由也與?『不忮不求,何用不臧?』」子路終身誦之。子曰:「是道也,何足以臧?」
Legge Translation (1861)
The Master said: "Dressed himself in a tattered robe quilted with hemp, yet standing by the side of men dressed in furs, and not being ashamed; — ah! it is Yu who is equal to this!'He harms none, he seeks nothing; — how can he be other than good?'"
Zilu was continually repeating these lines of the Book of Poetry. The Master said: "To have such virtue! Why should he think so much of it?"
